My friends and I have been toying with the idea of personalized (cycling indoor) training using AI to assist with planning and tailoring workouts around a busy schedule and ambitious goals, so I decided to build an experiment to see how it would work.Cycling is a sport that's very hard on the body and many cyclists burn out or get frustrated when trying to improve, so my hypothesis is that with proper analysis of training data, there's a lot of potential to build a good product.

Hacker News AI · 阅读原文Show HN: Animated step-by-step hints for any cryptic crossword clue
Cryptic crosswords are fun AND hard, and I've recently been introducing easier ones to my 11y/o daughter. It made me realise that when you're stuck, all you can do is hope you somehow come up with the way to crack it, or look at the answer and have all the satisfaction of figuring it out yourself removed!I also realised that when I was explaining to her how clues worked, I would scribble all manner of letters, arrows doodles to make sense of how the words of the clue could be mangled and eventually produce the answer. So I made a thing that would replicate the pencil and paper solving process, and create stepped visual animations that would enable you to get just enough info to make solving it within your reach, so you could feel like you did enough of the working out to get that "Aha!" feeling, without just getting straight to the answer. You can paste in any cryptic clue with its length, e.g. "Around Los Angeles, coatless dudes make AI model, say (6)", and the animation shows you how to solve it, one step at a time. It's split into 3 or 4 sections, which most cryptic clues fit into:1. Which end of the clue is the definition 2. What type of clue is it (there are several conventions in the cryptic world, a clue can be 1 of these, or a combination of several) 3. What are the pieces used to build the answer 4. How do the pieces fit together to create the answerYou can stop as soon as you have enough info to get you back to solving it yourself. It was easy to get a smart AI to solve the clue - but it was trickier to get it to be reliable and correct. LLMs can be very good at writing a confident, plausible breakdown for a completely wrong answer! So I needed to use a multi-pass approach:1. A small, fast model checks that the input looks like a cryptic clue. 2. A more capable model solves it and writes a step-by-step breakdown. 3. Another independent model solves it "blind", without seeing the first attempt or its answer. 4. A "judge" then checks that the two solvers agree on the answer and method, and that the letters in the breakdown actually add up to the answer. If that fails, it tells you it’s unsure instead of bluffing, and if it’s only fairly sure that the answer and "how to" is the correct one, it says so.The breakdown of how the clue is solved is then drawn as an animation, step by step, with letters and meanings scribbled and manipulated the way you'd do if you solving it yourself on paper.Depending on the complexity, a clue usually takes between about 10 to 30 seconds to be solved. There's a cache, so clues that have already been solved once can be returned without going through the AI process again. It can still get things wrong, especially on loose clues or ones with some flexibility in how they can be interpreted, but generally it performs pretty well.Your first clue solve is free, and an account gets you two more. There are paid plans to cover the AI costs involved for multiple solves as there is a cost to it.There's also some good resources for learning cryptic crosswords basics - and a library of clues with hints to practice with. You can also write and share your own cryptic clues - along with the hint animation generated for them https://crypticinkling.co.uk/createI’d love feedback from any cryptic crossword ninjas or beginners alike.PS here's the breakdown for the clue at the top of this post: "Around Los Angeles, coatless dudes make AI model, say (6)" - how many hints do you need to crack it? https://crypticinkling.co.uk/clues/1hi0s2x

Hacker News AI · 阅读原文Show HN: Stoke Money – Personal finance app built around a cash flow forecast
Hi HN,I've been through many finance tracking apps, starting with Personal Capital, then Monarch, and most recently Copilot. None of them have worked perfectly for my needs. All of these apps tend to model “cash flow” as the net sum of your transactions during a month, yet while credit card charges are reported immediately, they are typically deducted from checking (cash) accounts the following month when the bill is due. As a result, I've always had to maintain a separate spreadsheet to track my actual cash flow. These apps also have a huge focus on managing budgets, which has never been for me. My spending is rarely consistent month-to-month, so every month I'm comparing my fully justified spending against my budget, and tweaking my budget until I “pass”.So I built yet another finance tracking app. It has the usual components - accounts, transactions, categories - but the core is a cash flow projection engine, and everything else is built around it.Budgets are gone. Instead, each income/spending category is projected forward from your historical activity, but not as a flat monthly number. They land in whatever account you historically use (e.g. checking account for paychecks/rent/bills, credit/debit cards for daily spending). Credit card payments are modeled automatically based on your projected credit card balance. You can set up your own recurring transfers between accounts as well, to model savings, for example. The end result is that the app can forecast how your cash moves, and you can see in advance when any account might run low. If all of your accounts look good for the next 12 months, maybe you don't have a budgeting problem. What’s made the biggest difference for me has been the MCP integration, which I have connected to Claude (but can be connected to any AI agent of your choice). I have asked it to import historical transactions by uploading PDF account statements, categorize/tag all transactions that took place while I was on vacation, and plan transfers across my accounts to cover expected payments.I hope some people that share my frustrations will find this app useful.

And the test was a bit too long, but anyways.3mo ago, I was a prompt enginneer, who specialized in XML prompts (& completed HTML, CSS, JS, Tailwind). Then I tried to build a SaaS with AI. And as it included languages I didn't know, I probably just copy-pasted the entire code back & fourth. While I understood nothing. It gave me: Frustration (for being a perfectionist - Psychologically having high Openness), & making me quit (for having high Neuroticism). Then I left learning programming as thinking QI could do it... Well it could, and over the months, AI changed drastically.I lost hope in the field of Programming (not CS). But then 3mo later, I got an idea:"Why not build tools to help me?", and that idea was wild.I started Python, and surely people think it's an easy language to pick up. While IRL, it's considered one of the best language for real world building & AI/ML, aside from its simplicity. And so I treated it as a low level programming language (yes I learned low level controls in Python). But then, where I got stucked, I asked AI, and even the lowest level models could do it way better than me, without bugs.I was heavily discouraged, but then I came to the realization, even though AI can make something way broader, and robust than a human(if it has a good user), there's one thing for which the tool made by human... Seems better. It's that new ideas when people start programming, and instead of following a standard idea where you build a tool, you add something small in the code, that makes a big difference. You add one feature, that the AI cm never. Why? Because all thez can do is copy, or follow blindly what the AI says. Or even if they are creative, they cannot have the cause to build the feature you had when building (Casuality). That's what I think constantly... And will.. maybe... Because that's what that keeps me going even though I'm late in programming. So HN seniors & users (for some reasons, everyone here looks seniors with PhD in 5 fields), what's it that keeps you going?I'm just very very unconfident about my own idea. The test conducted showed me What I without (knowledge) + AI, and I with knowledge (- AI), can do. But I'm still very much doubting me.....Thanks in advance if you have read this entire... Article?

We added Pion DTLS to Anthropic's OSS scanner last week (https://github.com/anthropics/oss-scanner/pull/93), and today we woke up to a report with 36 bugs, including 6 security vulnerabilities: 2 critical, 3 high, and 1 moderate. Four of them affect WebRTC.Some of these vulnerabilities have been sitting in the codebase for over 4 years, surviving years of testing and security scans. It's funny that our inboxes are constantly spammed with AI-generated security reports from people using Codex and Claude, most of which flag pointless issues. Yet somehow, none of them caught these. The funniest part? Anthropic also found 3 bugs that OpenAI's internal code review missed. I had asked OpenAI to review a new DTLS API since they use Pion and had a use case for it in SPED. Their review didn't flag any bugs. Anthropic found an authentication issue, a deadlock, and a TLS KeyUpdate bug (Maybe their model ignored this one because it's not a WebRTC issue). Luckily, the API hasn't been released yet. The fixes: https://github.com/pion/dtls/pull/1236Here are the security advisories for the CVEs Anthropic found (all of them are pre-chatgpt!):Critical: DTLS handshake signature confusion allows peer impersonation - https://github.com/pion/dtls/security/advisories/GHSA-7c2r-jhm9-43vfCritical: Client authentication bypass through premature session caching - https://github.com/pion/dtls/security/advisories/GHSA-hhpj-h56m-9f2pHigh: Client authentication bypass with shared session stores - https://github.com/pion/dtls/security/advisories/GHSA-cqhp-ggp7-58qjHigh: Unbounded handshake cache allows remote memory exhaustion - https://github.com/pion/dtls/security/advisories/GHSA-jm57-r6vj-mwg9High: Oversized RSA keys allow CPU exhaustion - https://github.com/pion/dtls/security/advisories/GHSA-jp25-wc3w-p9xpModerate: Repeated certificate verification allows CPU exhaustion - https://github.com/pion/dtls/security/advisories/GHSA-qpgj-64qg-5m4rThe most annoying part is that neither company's models were willing to help with verifying or filtering the bugs, so we had to manually review them one by one (Spent all day :/

Hacker News AI · 阅读原文Anthropic Console overcharged my card 100x due to internationalization input bug
I am a LegalTech Attorney leading a developer team from Costa Rica. While trying to load credits onto my Anthropic API account (claude.com), I experienced a critical internationalization (i18n) and UX failure that has placed an unfair financial burden on me due to a severe oversight in their payment pipeline. The platform prompted me for a payment. Since I am in a Spanish-speaking region where localized systems and keyboards handle dots and commas differently, I typed 5.04.Anthropic’s input system completely failed to sanitize or validate the data. Instead of throwing a formatting error or converting it properly, it silently stripped the decimal internally and instantly charged my credit card $504.00 USD instead of $5.04 USD.To make matters worse, there was no confirmation modal or review screen summarizing the final amount before processing the transaction. It was a single-click, instantaneous overcharge.Anticipating the Obvious Skepticism: Before anyone suggests "you should have checked your regional settings" or "just wait for the chargeback":1. Users are not the QA team: In financial software, a system is never supposed to guess or automatically manipulate a numerical input without explicit validation. If an input is ambiguous due to locale differences, the application must reject it or ask for clarification, not execute a 100x overcharge.2. Scale of the vulnerability: This time it was $504.00, which is an unfair and frustrating burden for independent developers. But because this pipeline completely lacks a confirmation screen and basic input sanitization, the exact same bug could happen to someone typing 50.00 and end up charging them $5,000.00 or more instantly. It is a systemic financial risk.3. The Chargeback Illusion: Yes, I have already initiated a chargeback with my bank in Costa Rica. However, banking processes here are slow and take up to 120 days to resolve. In the meantime, the $504.00 has already been deducted and charged to my credit card statement. I am forced to pay for Anthropic’s engineering mistake out of my own pocket right now.The Support Wall: I filed an official complaint on the exact same day, minutes after it happened. I wasn't met with a human; I was blocked by an automated support BOT. The bot repeatedly and rigidly denied the refund, closing the ticket by citing generic policies without a single human ever looking at the fact that the overcharge was caused by a technical bug in their own platform. As developers, we build systems that process people's money. Omitting a confirmation screen on a financial transaction, failing to sanitize localized numerical inputs, and then hiding behind unyielding AI support bots to keep money that doesn't belong to you is completely unacceptable. If anyone from Anthropic's billing or engineering team is reading this, please look into this bug and review my case. It is a critical flaw that is actively harming international developers who are just trying to build on your ecosystem.Pura vida!R.S.G.

This article is brought to you by COMSOL. These days, no one blinks an eye at two-day, one-day, and even same-day package deliveries. Despite the plethora of localized fulfillment and distribution centers that have cropped up to meet the demand, delivery trucks still need to make considerably long drives, often over highways. To reduce fuel and maintenance costs as well as carbon emissions, companies are investing in electric trucks for their delivery fleets. While turning to electric trucks is a promising solution, the battery packs incorporated into these automotive designs often fall short in the lifetime needed to make long-distance highway travel feasible. To help overcome the issue of battery lifetime, a consortium of universities and industry partners incorporated multiscale simulation and a custom simulation app into the battery manufacturing process. The organizations involved in this project were Aurobay, Resolvent, the European Commission, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Vinnova (the Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems), Innovation Fund Denmark, and Volvo Group Trucks Operations. The simulation app, built by Resolvent, a Denmark-based engineering consultancy that specializes in green energy, enables the R&D department at Volvo to easily test battery lifetime performance. LaserWho? The Multiscale Simulation of Laser Welding for Optimal Battery Pack Manufacturing project — referred to as “LaserBATMAN” — was initiated in May 2022 and wrapped up in May 2025 (Ref. 1). Although BATMAN here refers to battery manufacturing and not the famous masked superhero, the goals for the project also strove for greatness. The LaserBATMAN project aimed to optimize two key performance metrics for battery packs: robustness and lifetime (Ref. 1). One element of the battery manufacturing process that affects both of these metrics is the laser welding used in component joining processes (for example, to connect battery cells in a pack via a busbar). If done correctly, laser welding can positively impact battery life, but if done incorrectly, laser welding can increase the risk of battery degradation. Computational modeling can be used to analyze and predict the effects of welding and joining processes at different stages of the manufacturing process. Martin Refslund Nielsen, former chief commercial officer and partner at Resolvent, explained that for this type of multiphysics and multiscale problem, “COMSOL Multiphysics is just the right tool.” R&D Workflow for Multiscale Model and App The Resolvent team used the COMSOL Multiphysics software to study how laser welding affects the electrochemistry and degradation of battery cells. At least, that’s how the project started. “Ambitions grew,” Nielsen said, explaining that the team ended up modeling the performance of the entire battery, from cell to pack level, and even “turned [the model] into a design tool in the end”, in reference to the app. After training the deep neural network of the battery model, the team built a custom simulation app to efficiently optimize busbar tabs in the configuration of a battery pack. First, the team built an electrochemical model of a battery cell by inputting the formulas for the relevant chemical reaction kinetics (Figure 2). The resulting cell-layer model was then fed input data, and the output data was used to train a deep neural network (DNN). With this reduced-order model, the team was able to quickly gain insight into cell behavior. After training the DNN of the battery model, the team built a custom simulation app to efficiently optimize busbar tabs in the configuration of a battery pack. Figure 2: The Resolvent battery model.COMSOL A “Tool Within a Tool” for Busbar Weld Design The different features of the simulation app, as described by Nielsen, include its options to input dimensions for the pack geometry (Figure 3), the number of cells, and operating conditions such as ambient temperature and charge–discharge current profiles. The app also makes it possible to apply a simple charging current and load customized cycles. Users are then able to see how the battery performs with each set of specific inputs. Figure 3. The battery pack model developed by Resolvent.COMSOL Another important aspect of Resolvent’s app is the Busbar Weld Design Tool button, which Nielsen described as “a tool within a tool.” This button can be used to efficiently calculate busbar weld performance after a number of cycles. After clicking the button, a window opens with options for setting different parameters, including the shape of the weld, busbar thickness, and penetration depth of the laser (Figure 4). “[This button] is interesting from a robust design perspective,” said Nielsen. Users can apply a variant to the input parameters to see what happens in production if the weld does not reach far enough into the busbar. Figure 4. Resolvent’s simulation app, showing how certain parameters can be customized. The model shows how the busbar weld is affected by a cooling airflow.COMSOL “We certainly get deep technical insight here, and we can dimension the design in the sweet spot. Deep technical insight is also key to optimizing product performance,” Nielsen said. For example, if the results suggest better cooling, the team could potentially reduce the design by two battery cells and retain the same performance, easily quantifying the tradeoff between cooling and setup. Predicting Pack Performance The app’s user interface also includes a Compute Battery button, which can be used to see the temperature of the weld in a given state, the state of charge, and the solid–electrolyte interface (SEI) layer thickness (Figure 5). The results can help the engineering team further determine if there is room for optimization in the design. For instance, a user can apply a cooling flow in the app and see if turbulence or standing air occurs. As explained by Nielsen, simulation apps offer more consistent analysis and reporting, and the intuitiveness of custom apps makes it easier to share knowledge. “We are in a much better place to optimize performance and increase robustness,” said Nielsen. Figure 5. Temperature in the given state (left), state of charge (middle), and SEI layer thickness (right) in the battery pack.COMSOL The custom simulation app developed by the LaserBATMAN consortium can be used to help produce more robust battery designs with ranges that can support highway travel over longer distances with fewer failures — all while promoting the use of green energy. A heroic project indeed. References “LaserBATMAN,” University of Skovde, accessed 08/21/2025, https://www.his.se/en/research/virtual-engineering/virtual-manufacturing-processes/LaserBatman/. R.
